Library Resources for Instructors

Library Resources for Instructors

The library is here to support you. We provide the following:

Tabitha would love to present to your class on any of these topics (or others). Schedule a time by emailing her at tdriver@es.vccs.edu or calling her at 757-789-1753. She is happy to come to your classroom (even if off campus), present in the LRC, or create a video for your online or evening class.

Using Library Resources/Finding Scholarly Sources:

Students will be shown how to use the library catalog, access databases in specific areas, and use LibKey to find ESCC paid for articles in their Google searches. Boolean operators, search filters, and clear prompts will be discussed.

Citations

Citations are necessary to prevent plagiarism but they also help us join the academic discussion and build on others’ ideas. We will discuss whichever citation style your professor requires (e.g. MLA, APA, Chicago) as well as tools for how to use those citations and use citation makers.

Critical Thinking & AI/AI Research Tools

How can we use AI Tools to improve our critical thinking? When we do not think critically about our AI searches, this leads to AI hallucinations/misinformation. Tools such as Elicit, Undermind, Consensus, Semantic Scholar, Research Rabbit, SciSpace, and Perplexity  help us compare articles and see whether articles are cited frequently by others.

Primary & Secondary Sources

What is the difference between primary and secondary sources? When would a primary source be necessary and when would we need secondary sources? Where can we find primary sources? We answer these questions with frequent examples.

Additional Presentation Topics

Creating a Power Point, Plagiarism, Spotting Fake News/Misinformation, the Research Process, Outlining/Brainstorming a Research Essay/Project, etc… (Feel free to ask for a different topic.)

If you don't want to take precious class time for a library presentation or perhaps your class is online or in the evenings, embed a library video into your canvas course telling students how to find library resources, learn about fake news or create a powerpoint:

Check out our library YouTube channel:

If there is a topic, you want us to cover, ask us to create a video.

Here is a folder of handouts that we provide.

Your Canvas course should automatically have a "Library Resources" page on the menu. A picture of the default page is below. However, we are also happy to tailor that page to your particular class. Does your class have a specific research assignment for which you want the library to provide step by step instructions? Do you want the library to provide a list of resources on a particular topic? Let us know!

Peer Tutors:

Alfie Destro manages the students who tutor in math and English. We try to keep those hours posted on the website, student message emails/announcements and library circulation desk handouts. Additionally, BrainFreeze provides 24/7 tutoring support in multiple subjects. For more information, contact Alfie at adestro@es.vccs.edu

Library Staff:

Library staff are also available to help for informal, spur-of-the-moment English and technology needs. Is your student struggling to submit an assignment on Canvas? Does your student need help getting organized for class? Does your student need someone to go through the process of writing an essay step-by-step?

We help with computer and Canvas basics, research, writing, and whatever else we know. Tabitha has helped with computer classes and even the occasional math problem. (It was the area of a shape. Don't give her calculus!)

Of course, we can only work with what we have. Students sometimes stop by expecting to get an essay written in ten minutes before they have to leave for work. We might point out a few grammatical errors, and they will say we helped them, but, obviously, there was deeper work for which we did not have time.

We can help by appointment, via Zoom, or with walk-ins.

We currently keep a microscope and slides on reserve for Dr. Foxworthy and a selection of books on reserve for Mrs. Duffman. Let us know if you want us to keep something on reserve for you.

Do you want to have your class meet in the library? Perhaps it gives them different seating options to work on a project, leaving you the ability to talk to students one-on-one. Or perhaps you want your students to meet in groups, and feel the noise level would be better spread out throughout the library instead of in a classroom. Perhaps you want to use the library computer lab (16 computers) or have the library staff around to help assist students with technology issues. Whatever the case, contact us to reserve a time!

If you have a student who has provided you with paperwork requiring testing accommodations, contact Tabitha in her role as the Testing Center Coordinator. Fill out this form here:

ESCC Instructor Test Form

The Testing Center is open 9-11am Monday, Tuesday and Thursday by appointment only. If your student is testing outside of those hours and the library is open, you can have that student test in the library by appointment; however, the library is a less secure environment.

You can also send 1-3 students to the library/testing center at a time to take makeup tests/quizzes. Remember the Testing Center is only open during specific times by appointment.
