Guide to Generative Artificial Intelligence
The release of ChatGPT, a large language model generative artificial intelligence, to the public in November 2022 caused a major disruption in higher education. The technology is changing daily, so please consider this merely an introduction to assist in the understanding and ethical use of generative AIs.
The Research Cycle

Before you decide on how to use generative AIs, you need to understand a bit about what they are and how they work.
2. Why Care?
Before you take the time to learn about GAIs, it might help to understand why it matters. There are multiple reasons to understand GAIs and know how to use them.
3. Pros
What are some benefits to using GAIs? What do they do well?
4. Cons
All technology has downsides. What are the concerns with GAIs? What do they not (yet?) do well?
5. How?
Once you've decided what to use a GAI for, how can you do so ethically? How can you make the best use of GAIs?
