Library of Congress Call Numbers

What are call numbers?

Call numbers are the letters and numbers placed at the bottom of a book's spine to show where the book goes. Just as an address tells someone where a house is located, the call number tells us where the book is located in the libraries.

There are different types of call number categorizations. The Dewey Decimal system is used in many public libraries.

How do you find the call number?

Searching the Quicksearch Catalog will give you a call number.

For more help in searching the catalog, check out the "Catalog Searches" page.

How do you use the call number to find the book?

Use the shelf guides to find the appropriate section. If the first letter in your call number is A, you will want to go to the A section.

At the ESCC LRC, the As are in the back of the library and the Zs are in the front near the computer lab.
