THE BEGINNING OF EASTERN SHORE COMMUNITY COLLEGE
"July 1, 1971, marked the beginning of a new era for higher education in Accomack and Northampton Counties. On that date, ties with the University of Virginia were severed, and Eastern Shore Community College (ESCC) was founded. The new two-year college became a member of the seven-year-old Virginia Community College System (VCCS)."

"ESCC's first year began quietly. There was no ceremony to celebrate the opening of a new community college. It seems that college personnel were not too happy about breaking ties with UVa and starting a connection with the VCCS."

"The only physical evidence of change at the Wallops campus was the removal of the University of Virginia signs and the placement of Eastern Shore Community College signs."
