Rough Timeline
(This timeline is a work in progress and has relied mainly on John C. Fiege's book about on 1971-2001 and the ESCC website articles from 2013-present. Some less important events are included in the timeline mainly to give context to various photos. Please let the LRC know if you have additional important dates to suggest adding.)
1964
Fall - The Eastern Shore Branch of the School of Continuing Studies of the University of Virginia started classes.
1971
July 1, 1971 - The Eastern Shore Branch of the School of Continuing Studies of the University of Virginia was replaced by Eastern Shore Community College. It became the fourth to last of the 23 community colleges to join Virginia Community College System (VCCS).
1972
November 1, 1972 - John C. Fiege became ESCC president.
1973
July 20, 1973 - The groundbreaking ceremony for the Melfa facility was held.
December 13, 1973 - ESCC received accreditation from SACSOC.
1974
October 19. 1974 - The dedication for ESCC's new facility in Melfa was held.
1978
SACSOC Accreditation was renewed at the 5 year mark.
1979
The Lil' Abner performance began outside as planned, but moved inside when it began raining. Still, it was considered a success.
1980
During the fall of 1980, some basketball games between community colleges were organized.
1986
The Nursing Program (through TCC) was added.
1988
SACSOC Accreditation was renewed for another ten years.
1988
SACSOC Accreditation was renewed for another ten years.
1989
February 1, 1989 - SCHEV awarded $10,000 for Project Horizons.
September 17, 1990 - C. L. Courtney, an ESCC student, died from leukemia. A scholarship for NHS students was set up in his honor.
February 1990 - A Phi Theta Kappa chapter was started at ESCC.
1996
October 11, 1996 - Richard E. Jenkins was inaugurated as president.
Teletechnet classes became available, allowing students to earn bachelors and master's degrees in specific programs.
2006
Dr. Cheryl Thompson-Stacy was inaugurated as president.
2008
Workforce Building construction was completed.
Dr. Linda Thomas-Glover became president of ESCC.
2013
August 1, 2013 - Eastern Shore Literacy Council returned its offices to campus.
October 22, 2013 - A ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Workforce Development Center was held.
2016
October 28, 2016 - ESCC celebrated its 45th Anniversary.
2017
October 13, 2017 - A groundbreaking ceremony for the new administration building was held (McKenzie Construction Corporation of Virginia Beach, Branscome Incorporated).
2018
Dr. Billy Greer became interim president of ESCC on January 22.
Virginia Secretary of Education Atif Qarni visited on April 25.
Longtime professor Barry Beville passed away October 18.
2019
Dr. James M. Shaeffer became president of ESCC in July.
June 4, 2019 - Eastern Shore Community College’s PN program has been ranked as one of the best in Virginia at number eight for 2019. Practical Nursing.org is noted as being the leading LPN advancement and ranking agency.
September - Old Dominion University president and ESCC's president signed a Guaranteed Transfer Partnership Agreement.
ESCC adds AAS Technical Studies Degree and Medical Scribe Apprentice Course.
December 3, 2019 - VCCS Chancellor Glenn DuBois visited ESCC.
2020
January 13, 2020 - The new administration building opened for classes.
YES! movement started.
March 23, 2020 - Due to the COVID pandemic, Spring 2020 classes were moved to remote instruction.
