MLA Formatting Style

Information obtained from:

The Purdue OWL. Purdue U Writing Lab, 2010. Web. 12 July 2012.

After a quote, paraphrase, or summary an in-text (also called parenthetical) citation is needed. The information needed depends on the sentence structure.

If no information is given in the sentence, the author's name and the page number go in the parentheses.

Example: "It was almost December, and Jonas was beginning to be frightened" (Lowrey 1).

If you refer to the author in the sentence, leave their name out of the parentheses

Example: According to Lowrey, "It was almost December, and Jonas was beginning to be frightened" (1).

If you are using 2 sources by the same author, use a shortened form of the title in addition to the author's name.

Example:  "It was almost December, and Jonas was beginning to be frightened" (Lowrey, "Giver" 1).

If the source does not have an author, use a shortened version of the title in the parentheses.

Example: "It was almost December, and Jonas was beginning to be frightened" ("Giver" 1).
